Why Do 2nd Graders Have Spelling Homework?

Goal: By completing each day’s assignment your child will improve their fine motor skills. As a long-term goal, they will improve their letter formation and letter pigmentation. Phonemically, your child will improve their spelling skills and ability to identify these words in any given context. So please, make sure your child completes their daily spelling homework.
Monday – Read the set of spelling words with your child.
Talk about the meaning of each word and use it orally in a sentence.
Tuesday – Write each spelling word 3 times.
Wednesday – Write the words in ABC order.
Thursday – Write a complete sentence using each spelling word. Make sure your child includes a capital letter and end mark at the end of each sentence. Use ! and ? not only periods.
Friday – Spelling test.
***Legible handwriting is part of each day’s homework, so, please remind your child to write neatly. Handwriting is also part of our 2nd Grade Report Card and by the end of each 9 weeks I’ll have to assess your child's handwriting based on assignments such as your student's spelling homework.
